Getting Married in Tracht

While modern brides usually marry in a classic white wedding dress at the church ceremony, they step before the registrar in a beautiful long bridal Dirndl. For Tracht weddings, the bridal Dirndl is rarely white – instead it's kept in cream or pastel colours. Festive bridal Dirndl in rosé, light blue or green usually feature a classic neckline or sweetheart neckline and are paired with delicate lace Dirndl blouses. The fabrics of Dirndl bridal dresses are fine jacquard or linen qualities, but should not be too shimmery or over the top. The same applies at weddings: the trend is towards tradition. Trachten weddings are once again celebrated in the classic three-piece Dirndl or in half-sleeve Dirndl. The trend towards tradition also applies to the groom. Men's Tracht for weddings includes fine short deerskin Lederhosen or light short goatskin Lederhosen. Wedding Lederhosen tend to be subtly embroidered in light tones, silver or a light blue. A white slim-fit Trachten shirt with stand-up collar is the perfect match, along with an elegant Trachten waistcoat from brands like Gottseidank or Grasegger and a traditional Trachten jacket in linen or loden. Classic Haferlschuhe and long Trachten socks complete the men's wedding Tracht! And while a wedding dress is only worn once, your pastel bridal Dirndl or traditional Lederhosen will accompany you for years to come, reminding you of unforgettable moments!

Dirndl blouse: where lace meets elegance

The Dirndl blouse is at least as important as the Dirndl itself, as it gives the bridal Dirndl its desired Trachten style. Whether traditional or alluring – it always comes down to the Dirndl blouse. The selection and variations of Dirndl blouses for weddings today are enormous. Whether a blouse with a balconette neckline, V-neck or a high-neck Dirndl blouse – they all make the perfect accessory for the Dirndl. Lace Dirndl blouses are modern and definitely a highlight of any Dirndl outfit. But Dirndl blouses with puff sleeves and plenty of volume are also back en vogue. The colours can be matched to the bridal Dirndl. White Dirndl blouses still dominate, but lace Dirndl blouses in cream and off-white tones are also fitting for Trachten weddings. We've selected the most beautiful and elegant Dirndl blouses for bridal Dirndl, from designers such as Kinga Mathé, Gottseidank, Sportalm, Heimatglück, Wenger, Anno Domini and many more.

Trachten Gilet – Waistcoat Meets Tradition

He may not want to steal the show from his bride, but the groom can certainly show style at a Trachten wedding. Best with a traditional wedding outfit consisting of short traditional Lederhosen, a slim shirt, a high-neck Trachten waistcoat and a classic Trachten jacket. The Trachten waistcoat in particular is where men can show style and play with colour – depending on what colour the bride wears with her bridal Dirndl. The trend in Trachten waistcoats is moving towards dark blue, classic greens, but also the occasional bold raspberry tone – as long as the waistcoat is traditional. Trachten gilets are also gaining momentum, such as the Miesbach gilet with chain at the neckline or the coachman's waistcoat with large decorative coin buttons from the Dachau region. For Lederhosen, men tend to go for lighter and greyish tones. The main thing is that the wedding Lederhosen are high quality – preferably deerskin. For shirts, the white stand-up collar shirt takes centre stage at Trachten weddings. We have a fine selection of Lederhosen, jackets and Trachten waistcoats for you from labels like Gottseidank, Ostarrichi, Grasegger and Meindl.

WEDDING GUESTS

Tracht for Best Men, Bridesmaids & Wedding Guests

At a Trachten wedding, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and other wedding guests naturally also want to look their best in a Dirndl. They're not limited to pastel Dirndl – they're free to choose their own colours and materials. As a wedding guest, you don't necessarily need to wear a light Dirndl with a shimmering silk apron. Dirndl designers like Gottseidank or Kinga Mathé combine fine, festive fabrics such as linen or woven jacquard with classic Dirndl cuts. Guest Dirndl can certainly be kept dark in deep green or navy blue. Red, on the other hand, is not favoured for guest Dirndl, as the bold colour could steal the show from the bride. Black is also generally not worn as a guest at a Trachten wedding. The rule of thumb: understated elegance and tradition are the order of the day for festive wedding Dirndl. As an alternative to Dirndl for wedding guests, a Trachten skirt is a great option. Trachten skirts for weddings are usually festive and long, in a midi length well below the knee. Trachten dresses for weddings also look elegant and understated and are perfect for guests who don't love wearing Dirndl. For men attending a wedding as guests, the trend is towards traditional Trachten outfits with short Lederhosen, a slim shirt, gilet and Trachten jacket. Like the ladies in Dirndl, men at a Trachten wedding are not bound to specific colours. The important thing is to coordinate the Trachten waistcoat with the jacket over it. A colour contrast works here, but gilet and jacket in matching tones also look very festive. Long Trachten knee socks, colour-coordinated, and classic Haferlschuhe complete the outfit for the father of the bride and best man.

IN FESTIVE ATTIRE

Trachten Weddings Through the Ages

For a long time, people in Bavaria married in black. The Spanish were to blame, writes Trachten culture consultant Monika Hoede: ever since Spain as a world power introduced strict black clothing at court in the 16th century, black became an integral part of festive church attire. Dyeing fabrics black was still an expensive art at the time, until the transition from plant-based to synthetic – and thus durable and affordable – dye production in the 19th century. Black as a fashion colour beyond festive occasions thus became affordable. And black remained the standard for weddings, especially in rural, middle-class society. The "Ehrenkleid" (honour dress) was newly made along with the trousseau and was intended to accompany women as their Festtagsgwand (festive attire) for a lifetime, worn at all major holidays. The middle class also had to ensure the dress was practical. The bodice was laced and could grow with the wearer. The other fashionable elements of Tracht also show that they originated from house and leisure wear. Today, the Dirndl is worn almost exclusively for festive occasions. And once again, gladly for weddings too.
